RP RULES
Guideline One:
Godmodding! Aka "Jack hits Billy in the face and knocks him out"
Godmodding is when you make your character all powerful! It's when you place "autohits" on other people. Auto hits are basically you saying an attack has already connected and done damage to someone else. Godmodding is looked down upon in most RP communities.
Example of Godmodding:
"Jack hits billy in the face and knocks him out"
This is bad! You should never automatically hit someone or knock them out. Give them time to respond! This makes the RP a lot more fun when both of you are doing your own little combos in attempts to block of guard against attacks! But remember, don't dodge EVERY attack! It's impossible for you to do that.
Example of a good not-godmodding post:
"Jack reaches out to punch Billy in the face with enough strength to knock him out."
See, here you're saying your character is about to punch him in the face, and you're showing that if the punch connects Billy will be knocked out. However, you're giving him time to react, so Billy could reply something like, "Billy steps back as the punch comes, but he isn't fast enough and gets hit on the nose. He isn't knocked out, but his nose is broken."
Another show of godmodding is when your character's powers have no weakness or allow them control to a stupidly powerful level. Remember! Even Superman has his weakness! Flaws in your character and his or hers powers make her even funner to RP. I mean, would watching Super hero movies be as much fun if they didn't have to over come weakness?
Example of a Godmodding power:
" Can do what ever he wants with his powers and manipulate people."
See, this power has no weakness, and they aren't even clear on what their power is exactly. You need to be clear on what their power is!
Example of another Godmodding Power:
"Can do what ever he wants with his powers but his power are limited because has not fully adjusted to them."
See, this is just as bad as the previous one even though he added weaknesses!
Example of a Decent Power:
"She has the ability to completely control chemicals, including pheromones (chemical reactions inside the body). Once she has her hands on someone's skin, she can control their emotions and desires. If she is around them, Rose can heavily influence them, such as bringing heavy feelings of sadness or anger."
This is a power that doesn't give someone almighty control of the universe or other people, she can just influence them, make them happy or sad, stuff like that. She also needs to be within a certain distance or in contact with the person. Rose can't just decide to send people into a blind rage from across the room.
Guideline Two!
Power playing!
Power playing is when you control someone else's character that you don't have permission to control! This couldn't be simpler. Just don't do it!
Guideline Three!
Metagaming~
Metagaming is when your character knows stuff they couldn't possibly know! This includes names of other characters and information you may have found out OOCly. Basically, if your character hasn't been introduced to someone or found the information HIMSELF he can't know it!
Guideline Four!
Mary Sue and her brother Gary Stu!
Mary and Gary are basically names to describe "perfect" characters. Characters with perfect personalities and a tragic past are considered Mary Sues. You'll probably be able to get more information from google this phrase, and I'm sure there are plenty of sites to help you avoid creating these obnoxious characters.
Guideline Five!
Writing long and meaningful posts!
A lot of times on these forums you'll see people post stuff like: "Yeah" for their entire reply! This isn't too good. A reply should have enough detail to show what your character is doing and give enough for the person you're replying to to reply back to you! A good way to make long and meaningful responses is to think of the RP as an anime scene. Imagine your character is in an anime, reacting to whatever just happened! Look at how he or she moves in your head~ Then just type it out!
Another, less weird, way of doing this is to think of these things:
Sight: What is your character seeing?
Speech: What is your character saying?
Response: What is your character responding to?
Action: Is your character doing anything?
Action Response: Is your character doing an action in response to someone else's reaction?
Smell: Can your character smell anything?
Hear: Is your character hearing anything?
Items: Is your character holding an item or something?
Appearance: What is your character wearing? What is his or her hair doing? If she's a girl, is her hair blowing in the wind, getting tangled up in her glasses? Is your character's sweater being torn or messed with by the character?
Guideline Five and a Half!
What you didn't type didn't happen!
Basically, if you didn't type out an action, but implied it in a way that's not so clear, it never happened! You can't say "But my character ran away from you and escaped" if you didn't actually type that out! You can't go back and edit that into your post if someone else has responded either. You need to think about your responses and decide if their the proper actions to do. You can't go back and decide that you wanted to do something else.
Guideline Six!
What goes around comes around!
Just because this is RP doesn't mean anything goes. When you RP you're playing a role within a world. You can't just attempt to kill someone and expect to not get in trouble for it in character! You need to realize your character is a person living inside the world the RP takes place in. In some of these worlds, the rules from anime and manga don't apply! You need to think about the environment your character is in. You can't expect to do a bunch of bad stuff in character and not get chased down by the police.
Guideline Seven!
Grammar is good!
A lot of people think that on the internet you can just throw away grammar. You can't its not facebook! Especially in RPs. When you take the time to type properly you're showing you care enough about this RP to spell clearly and actually show what your character is doing in a clear and easy to understand way. Basic rule of thumb: If you wouldn't turn it into your English teacher, don't post it here!
Tips for Proper Grammar!
If your internet browser doesn't have a spell check and you're not sure how to spell a word, google search it! 90% of the time Google will come up with a correction for your word! If you're unsure about the words you're using this handy dandy spell check can come in handy: www.spellchecker.net/ Also, if you're on a laptop or computer that has a program like Microsoft Word or something, it's a really good idea to type out profiles and posts on that in order to make sure your sentence structure is all right.
And remember! Proper sentences state with a capital letter, end in a period, question mark or exclamation point. Proper sentences will always have a subject too! "Is running away" is not a proper sentence. "She is running away" is a proper sentence! The subject is the person or thing that is doing the action or having an action being done to!
Guideline Eight!
Reading!
RPing is all about reading! If you don't like to read, pick another hobby. You need to read the rules and follow them to the exact dot! Also, you need to read everyone's post and not just decide to skim over them if their long. Every post is important and needs to be read so you can reply in a proper way! Even if it takes half an hour, read everything so you can fully understand the RP and not seem like an idiot!
Guideline Nine!
The Admin is always right!
If you find yourself disagreeing with the owner of an RP, just stop fighting with them. They own the RP, they spent the time to type out the rules and character profiles and plot for you to enjoy yourself with. They have the final say on what goes. You can't go into a thread and try to argue with an admin about the logic of their RP universe. You wont win most of the time. If you don't like it, make your own RP.
Also, when an admin tells you to drop it, drop it. Don't even respond to her, just say "Okay" and continue the RP. Another good tip is to never bring OOC drama into the RP. If you have an issue with someone, PM the RP's admin to discuss it. Most of the time the admin should decide to help you figure it out, or talk to the other person for you. If the admin isn't willing to do this, then you shouldn't be in such a bad admin's RP to begin with.
(Side note: If some one is left in charge by the admin, then they are to be listened to.)
Guideline Ten!
Be a proper Admin!
If you run an RP and you see people not following the rules, give them a warning, but beware, do not do it in the thread. Send them a PM. If you warn them in the thread they may get embarrassed and react rudely. As an admin it's your job to keep the RP flowing smoothly. If people break the rules after you've warned them once or twice, kick them from the RP or ban them for a set amount of time. Remember, being the admin of an RP means you have to be a little mean sometimes to keep order! Also, don't just let people get away with breaking your rules. You set them for a reason! Don't forget that you're the admin, you have power over the RP, they don't!
Guideline Eleven!
Sexy Time is a No No!
Weird title I know, but please remember that just because you think your character would be "omg perfect" with another character as a couple doesn't mean you can have your character force themselves on the other character! These characters are like people. The relationships need to form naturally! Keep in mind, this isn't the "Mature Board" also if you put in your sign ups that you and someone else are together, and they agree its okay.
Guideline Twelve!
Staying Active:
I can't tell you how frustrated I get when someone joins, you start an interaction with them, and they vanish. Its rude, and a inconvenience. So don't join, or at least break off the interaction before leaving.
Guideline Thirteen!
Any and all RPs that are going to be Private RPs must be prefixed with [PRIVATE]
